An interview with Executive Director Matt Gruhn of the Marine Retailers Association. Matt shares his journey of leading the association as it wrestled with how to best serve its membership during the COVID pandemic. The association did this by "doubling down" on bringing the best services and information to its membership and by opening its resources up to all marine retailers.
Great examples of leadership and organizational pivots to produce information and services that made an impact for the entire industry and MRA's membership!
Thank you Matt for sharing your journey with us!
In this video I share the research of Brene Brown's Dare to Lead.
For the past two years, I've been using the program to develop courageous leaders and organizational cultures to help nonprofits navigate changing realities.
I was certified two years ago by Brene in her Dare to Lead leadership curriculum and the impact it's having on my work and my clients is tremendous, especially in these times that create so much anxiety and fear.
I hope you'll enjoy this introduction to the four skill sets of building courage!
If an organization builds its mission statements with four consistent components, it can cascade that Authentic Promise mission statement down through the organization to teams, departments and even job descriptions.
The mission statement components include:
This builds alignment to the authentic promise of the organization, its mission, the impact the organization delivers, clears up confusion about whose role is whose, and finally, brings clarity and authority to each level and department of an organization.
Examples are offered as to how to apply this to nonprofits and NGOs.
An introduction to an approach to human centered design for creating new or pivoting existing social impact programs and organizations.
This video above walks you through a high level description of the value proposition and business model canvas approach and tools.
These tools are adaptions from the brilliant book Value Proposition Design: How to create products and services customers want by Alex Osterwalder. Here's a no-affiliate link to the book.

This video introduces the concept and application of the "success of change" formula with a couple of stories of application in nonprofits and local government.
Another concept and application presented is the idea of "Bumping and Pacing" (min 22:55). There is only so much stretch that our organization can make and we need time to recover and stabilize the changes at the new levels of performance.
Did these concepts and applications provoke any ideas for you? An examples?
